Welcome to the era of 'I can say whatever I want' - and erase it with "It's a Joke" or "I was joking" or plain and simple "Jokin'".
Reality check - once you have said it, it can not be taken back. You can't hit a magic button that rewinds time. Just because a thought pops into your mind, does not make it something that needs to be said out loud. It seems we have turned into a society of mindless, unthinking, uncaring idiots. More and more I hear 'joking' at the end of a sentence - after a few second pause that is - followed by a giggle or nervous smile. I guess after hearing what they just said, the next thought is 'oops, did I say that?' and the automatic response is 'joking'. That doesn't fix anything, it doesn't remove the hurt caused, or the embarrassment caused to either side.
Freedom of expression is one thing but you still have to think before you speak. Once it is out there, it is out.
Take responsibility for your words as well as your actions.
